Many people are confused by the range of colours, sizes, and type of bins required to suit Glasgow City Council’s waste management strategy for your home.

The information and links below help clarify the dos and don’ts of your Domestic Waste Disposal.

It is essential that all residents comply with Glasgow City Councils guidance. Failure to do so can result in what is considered “contaminated” recycling which will not be collected. In these situations the cost of a contractor to sort the waste correctly is incurred by residents and can result in unpleasant back court environments, particularly in the summer months.

The majority of our properties have 3 bin types:

  • General waste = green wheelie bins/large metal containers/metal ash bins.  Please ensure that all general household waste is bagged and securely tied before being places inside your general waste bin.
  • Mixed Recycling = Blue wheelie bin.  Loose recyclable items only in this bin, no plastic bags.
  • Food Recycling = Grey wheelie bins.  Please use compostable bags only for food waste.  No bread wrappers or carrier bags.

For more information or details of any other bin types your property may have please consult the Glasgow city Council website.
