Traffic Update - University Avenue

Traffic Update - University Avenue

10 April 2019

Please see below a traffic impact update from University of Glasgow relating to planned improvement works at University Avenue:

You may be aware that we are shortly due to start work to improve University Avenue, making it safer for all.

This week we enter the first phase of this process, beginning the first of two new wider pedestrian crossings which will safely accommodate the high numbers of pedestrians that currently use the Avenue and the increasing numbers projected for the future.

The two crossings will be built consecutively, with work on the first - located outside the University’s Main Gate - starting this week, and due to be completed by late October.

Construction will then move to the second, outside the James McCune Smith Learning Hub, between the end of October 2019 and end of February 2020.

When the first crossing is constructed, the bus stops currently located outside the University’s Main Gate will be temporarily relocated to opposite University Gardens (westbound) and after Southpark Avenue (eastbound).

We have worked hard to ensure that disruption is minimised throughout this work. For this reason two-directional traffic along University Avenue will continue, however it will be restricted to one lane through the short section where the work is taking place, with two sets of traffic lights managing traffic flow.

As we have outlined in previous updates and at public meetings, these works will make the Avenue safer for all and futureproof it against the greater volumes of pedestrians we expect to see when the new buildings open. We appreciate that the vast majority of those who use the Avenue are on foot, which is why improving the experience for pedestrians is our priority.

However, the plans for University Avenue have been developed following extensive consultation with a wide range of stakeholder groups over many years, and we are confident we are implementing a design that best balances the needs of all.

It is vital that we take this opportunity to make sure that the infrastructure that serves our growing campus is safe and fit for purpose. I would like to thank you for your patience whilst we undertake this work.

Ann Allen MBE
